Mykonos Town — also known as Chora — is the vibrant heart of Mykonos. Built amphitheatrically around the old harbor, the town is famous for its maze-like narrow streets, whitewashed houses, blue shutters, colorful balconies, and bougainvillea-covered alleyways. The architecture reflects the classic Cycladic style while the winding lanes were historically designed to confuse pirates.
The town combines traditional charm with cosmopolitan energy. Visitors can explore elegant boutiques, lively cafés, waterfront restaurants, art galleries, and nightlife venues, especially around the famous district of Little Venice, where houses stand dramatically above the sea and sunsets create one of the island’s most iconic views.
Among the most recognizable landmarks are the Kato Mili Windmills, a row of historic white windmills overlooking the harbor. Built mainly during the 16th century, when Mykonos prospered through trade and grain production, the windmills used the island’s strong northern winds to mill wheat. Today they stand as symbols of Mykonos’ maritime and cultural heritage and offer panoramic views over the Aegean Sea, especially at sunset.
